How I Fell Into Publishing by David Ganezer.

Being the Publisher of one of Santa Monica's several publications is exhilarating. This City has a smalltown feel, but at the same time, it is part of one of the World's great metropolitan areas.

Most of us fell into doing what we do. I fell into publishing.

I started the Observer to stop the pain in my heart when Santa Monica's 123 year old newspaper, the Outlook Newspaper, was suddenly put out of business by Copley Newspaper's, Inc on March 23, 1998. I needed a job. The town needed a newspaper. I immediately announced that I, a former Outlook paperboy, would start that newspaper. Hurrah.

Anyway, it's five years later. We publish once a week on Mondays. The Observer Newspaper is profitable; and because it doesn't lose money, it will be here in 5,10 and 15 years.

What distinguishes The Observer from the other 6 publications, mostly weeklies, in town is that frankly, it's more interesting. The content is a mix of alternative weekly writing and downhome Our Town type stuff. Local sports, politics, schools, education, business and entertainment. Santa Monica is the center of the entertainment industry, and a local publication better focus on the local industry. i.e. movies, theater and television.

Our banner sometimes says, "The Newspaper That's Not Written by Saints". Those of you who know me know that I'm no saint. I have tried and failed at a lot of things and left regrets along the way . But I'd rather read with the sinners than write with the saints, because, the sinners produce a much more interesting newspaper. Apologies to Billy Joel.

Feel free to write me with any question, I'll write back. You can also write our staff directly at their e mail addresses, or through editor@smobserver.com.
